RECENT:

2 March 2010, Evros Delta, Greece Only 1 adult unringed LWfG was observed in the morning in Evros Delta among appr. 500 WfG and 2 RbG in Dimitriadis meadow.

After last weeks' floodings in Evros River a lot of alterations have been made in the morphology of the part of the delta that is close to the border (the so called "eastern part"). The main embankment that prevented the water of the river to enter the cultivations and the wetland was destroyed on February 18th in the most northern part. Until today all of the "eastern part" is flooded, from Feres to the sea. Paloukia lagoon is altered completely as huge openings have been created around the dyke, especially towards the sea. Meadows of the "eastern part" that were used in late wintering season by the geese are flooded. Source: Eleni Makrigianni/Evros Delta Management Authority .

19 March 2009, Hortobágy, Hajdú-Bihar, Hungary 17 LWfG present: 3 individuals on the Kondás fishpond, and another 14 birds on the Hortobágy fish pond unit XI. These birds were probably not of the Fennoscandian population: they were mixed with first large spring flocks of Greater White-fronts that have arrived recently, the fish pond unit XI site is not typical for the Fennoscandian birds, and one of the birds at the fish pond unit XI had extremely large white front patch (covering the left eye) - such an individual has never been reported in the small and well monitored Fennoscandian flock. 15 March 2009, Lake Kerkini, Greece The lessers are rediscovered! The main flock of 36 individuals (all adults) is still at Trigono. Four of them were colour-ringed (Red/white – right, White only right, Black left, Orange/red OR red/orange left). Further away there were 5 A. anser. No GWfG observed during the last days. Thodoros speculates that it is possible that the main flock of lessers never left Kerkini this winter, but he just didn't manage to locate them the previous days. 12 January 2009, Lake Kerkini, Greece 41 LWfG at Trigono, all of them adults (cf. 27 November 2008). The observation conditions were fine, the light was good but not all legs were visible; no rings were seen on the legs checked. Source: Theodoros Nazaridis conveyed by Yannis Tsougrakis/LWfG Life project team. - There's two alternative ways to interpret this observation: 1) The family with four juveniles (2 ad + 4 juv) that was present at least until the end of November has left the area, and in this case the total number of LWfG observed at Kerkini this winter would be raised to 51 individuals. The fact that no colour rings were observed today could also point towards a turnover of individuals since the end of November. 2) All the four juveniles have died since the end of November at Lake Kerkini, in which case the drop of 45 ind (41 ad + 4 juv) on 27 Nov to 41 ind. (all adults) today wouldn't need any further assumptions.
