Satellite tracking from Polar Ural in European Russia and southwards in 2009
Introduction
The Fennoscandian Lesser White-fronted Goose Conservation Project and
the Goose, Swan and Duck Study Group of Northern Eurasia (GSDSG) have
co-operated on satellite tracking of Lesser White-fronted Geese for
several years. In the Polar Ural mountains, the first birds where
tagged in 2004. A "day to day" description of the tracking can be found
at From Polar Ural in Russia to Mesopotamia in Iraq 2004-2005» and From Polar Ural in European Russia 2006»
A thorough description of the Polar Ural area, European Russia, can be
found in "Morozov 2000. Surveys for LWfG in the Bolshezemelskaya
Tundra, European Russia, in 1999" PDF - 680KB».
In 2009 one bird was tagged by Vladimir V. Morozov in August. The bird got satellite transmitters with IDs 3501.
Results
The bird left the moulting area and was located in the lower Ob river 1
September. It stayed here until 21 when it continued migrating south.
It was shortly located in north Kazakhstan on 28 September, but was on
18 October located in an hitherto unknown staging lake between the more
well-known lakes Mamyrkol and Batpakol in the Kustanay area in
Kazakhstan. As of 20 November it was still in this area. The
transmitter is still conveying data, but we suspect that it is lying on
the ground, with the bird either dead or far gone. We will update as
soon as we get more information from the satellite transmitter.
