The weather has been relatively harsh the last days with much snow. The other pair being the same as seen on Säärenperä on 6 May - see picture of pair 1 male from Sääri (Source: Tomas Aarvak / LWfG Life project team).

11 May, 2006, Salme, Rahuste, Estonia One LWfG migrating. The bird was seen in a large flock of Barnacle Goose; this plus the fact that the site (on SW part of the Saaremaa island) is situated quite much W of the regular sites of the wild LWfG, points towards swedish reintro origin.

There are still a lot of ice, frozen lakes and lagoons in Thrace. We are waiting for another cold wave from Monday 6 February (Source: Maria Panayotopoulou by way of Yannis Tsougrakis / LWfG LIFE Project).

31 January 2006, Greece The lessers have not been observed in the Evros Delta since the 17th of January. The north-eastern parts of Greece and the Evros Delta have been much affected by the recent very cold weather conditions. There has been no snow, but extreme low temperatures with very strong winds. Geese have flooded Greece and have been reported from several places like islands and even southern areas  like north Peloponnisos. Intensive hunting and/or poaching was reported from many places. Many colleagues of HOS were notified at various sites to have a closer look at the arrived White-fronted geese and the project team has been out searching. So far all the reports (including North East Aegean islands) are negative. Two Red-breasted have been reported shot on Lesvos island.

For a short period the hunting was banned at Evros due to total frost.

Where are our birds? Their core areas at Evros are frozen. They could be around at the wider area of Evros (feeding in fields or mixed with white-fronts?). But, the high dispersal of geese at wide areas at Evros, at Northern Greece and Greece in general, makes their tracking extremely difficult if not impossible. They could also have left the country. Our Turkish colleagues have been notified. They will do their midwinter counts in early February and pay particular attention for lessers (Source: Yannis Tsougrakis / LWfG LIFE Project).

14 January 2006, Lake Neusiedl, Austria Six adults among the white-fronts (Source: Dr. Johannes Laber by way of Petteri Tolvanen / LWfG LIFE Project).

10-11 January 2006, Evros Delta, Greece 40 LWfG were seen in the same area as last winter. There were 7 goslings in the flock, and four birds had colour rings (Source: Didier Vangeluwe).
